Colton Burpo and his family live in Imperial Nebraska. His family consists of his mom, Sonja Burpo, his dad Todd Burpo and his sister Cassie. After Colton’s dad was diagnosed with breast cancer, kidney stones and blew out
his knee playing baseball the Burpo’s were heading down a rough patch. Colton started to complain about stomach pain and started to catch a high fever becoming very ill. The local hospital misdiagnosed as stomach flu when, not known of the time, it’s a sign of Colton’s rupturing appendix. Colton’s parents frightened at the looks of nearly dealth in Colton’s eyes decided to take him all the way to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte to find help the local hospital could not provide him. The doctor there, Dr. Timothy O’ Holleran, concluded Colton needed an emergency appendectomy and was rushed into surgery right away. After Colton’s major surgery, Dr. O’ Halleran informed the Burpo’s that is all the hospital could do for him, Colton was showing no signs of improvement. The doctor gave them two choices, to transfer hospitals to Omaha or Denver. At this point the family was heartbroken and too tired for more travel. Todd was sick to his stomach from the little sign of life his child was showing and doubted god’s ability’s to help his son. As a pastor Todd was left with no other choice to look to god and pray for the best. His family’s prayers were answered, in the next couple of days Colton started to look better and feel better. In the following months after Colton was completely healed Colton made a comment about visiting heaven. Completely shocked and caught off guard, Todd and Sonja had a lot of questions to ask Colton about his comment about visiting Heaven. Throughout the book, Colton then explains his visit to heaven and back. Colton explains how he left his body during his surgery and was sitting in Jesus’s lap. Colton describes how he saw his baby sister that died in his moms stomach, he backs up this with facts about her appearance. He explains that his sister he met in heaven has brown hair just like Sonja. “Hearing him describe the girls face… it was something a 6 year old couldn’t just make
up.”
